Fresh Churros. Outtake from an LA Mag assignment.
Here’s a preview for a new project with a new friend, Rishi Kumar, from my hometown of Diamond Bar. He’s a sustainable suburban farmer/educator who’s turned every usable foot of yard-space at his suburban home into food growing space, where they produce food year round. Rishi has also been working with the nearby Pomona Unified School District where he’s helping to build gardens at some of the schools and always working on grant proposals for more.
Here’s a few photos from his home and two garden work days at the local elementary schools.
Top of the Mountain, Aspen 2013
In my holiday boredom I’m finally getting around to finalizing a bunch of scans from this past year. Here’s a fairly recent one from Aspen. Although I’ve never skied or snowboarded once in my life, when I was in Aspen for a couple days I bought a lift ticket so I could go up to the top, take some pictures, and come back down. This picture was taken just outside of the restaurant up there, The Sundeck, around 10 or 11 in the morning.
Daaaaang. So nice!
This is a job from USC/Dornsife College Mag that just came out. I was hired to photograph various aspects of the city of Pacoima in the San Fernando Valley for a story USC was doing on an environmental justice program (PERE) in the Dornsife College at USC.
Pacoima was listed as a “Toxic hotspot” community, where air pollution levels regularly exceed safety standards recommended by the state, along with five other lower income, mostly Hispanic communities. Maria Guzman (portrait) volunteered to monitor air pollution levels in Pacoima for PERE. The city is bordered on three sides by the 210, 5 and 118 freeways, while countless industrial businesses, auto shops and recycling plants line the streets. My job was to find the line where the urban and suburban meet and are forced to coexist.
One of the best assignments of the few I’ve had so far. It was also amazing that they requested I shoot film for the project, after seeing my series on my hometown. I spent about 5 days cruising Pacoima morning - afternoon. DREAM JOB
