This is a job from USC/Dornsife College Mag that just came out. I was hired to photograph various aspects of the city of Pacoima in the San Fernando Valley for a story USC was doing on an environmental justice program (PERE) in the Dornsife College at USC.
Pacoima was listed as a “Toxic hotspot” community, where air pollution levels regularly exceed safety standards recommended by the state, along with five other lower income, mostly Hispanic communities. Maria Guzman (portrait) volunteered to monitor air pollution levels in Pacoima for PERE. The city is bordered on three sides by the 210, 5 and 118 freeways, while countless industrial businesses, auto shops and recycling plants line the streets. My job was to find the line where the urban and suburban meet and are forced to coexist.
One of the best assignments of the few I’ve had so far. It was also amazing that they requested I shoot film for the project, after seeing my series on my hometown. I spent about 5 days cruising Pacoima morning - afternoon. DREAM JOB

YEAH! My buddy Edward “Cush Daddy” Cushenberry getting some internet love.
and this. this. this thithitsthisssssss
Photographer Edward Cushenberry.
Cushenberry’s photographs suck me in, kick me around and leave me spinning.
Situating himself in a classic documentary tradition, Cushenberry’s photographic choices feel dependent on story-telling & situation rather than pure aesthetics. nothing is static. crops and composition shift wildly from photograph to photograph. horizon lines zig-zag and then disappear into a tangle of clutter or blur. color palettes change with the time of day.
while many of his peers have gone the way of bright-white on-camera-flash and paper backdrops, scrutinizing the world with electronic light at f22, cushenberry’s work embraces shadow and the weirdness of ambient light. life is happening under fluorescent lamps and Cushenberry wants to capture it. all of it. the hectic and sensual story of family and city and friends, Edward Cushenberry wants to show it all. and so he does.

Big brother, little brother.
Going through photos from when I busted into a Chino Hills mansion that was turned into a “Chinese Maternity Hotel.” Was recently abandoned when these photos were taken. Wish I could’ve spent the whole day there.
